The bishop's diktat brought him some surcease
as, grinning, he denied them life as pair.
One padding softly in the darkened trees;
one pouncing swiftly over draughts of air.
Beastly consequence to crime well-mated:
mate to mate denied, so both were fated.
The tale confirms his cruel plan did succeed
until his death resolved the couple's need.
The story stops here: yet some still recall
how late at night she wept into wolf's pelt
and stroked its fur, and crooned, and murmured all
the feathery endearments that she felt.
For love to love survives despite all cost,
and spirit so transformed is never lost.
