So, last night was Daniel's first Super Bowl...or at least, the first one that he's taken an interest in.

It was the Steelers vs. the Seahogs.

Seahawks, I said. Look at their helmets. See the little bird head on them?

He was pulling for the Pittsburgh, as was Dave. I was secretly (to Daniel) and not-so-secretly (to Dave) hoping for a win for Seattle.

"Why do you want the Steelers to win?" I asked Daniel, suspecting his dad of brainwashing influence, although I really don't think Dave said much one way or the other.

"Well, Steelers is a much cooler name than Seahogs. I mean, steel is what they make swords and stuff out of, like for fighting. So Steelers are like fighters."

SeaHAWKS, I wanted to say, but I complimented him on his reasoning. We talked about the other meaning for steal and how that could work for a football team as well (stealing the ball).

Daniel watched very little of the actual game, but he did keep track of the score. Kind of.

"31!" He shouted triumphantly. "31 points!"

"13," Dave corrected automatically.

I was still pleased that he'd gotten the numbers correct, even though he'd read them wrong.

When Seattle scored, he had a mini-meltdown. "They have 10 now and we only have 14 and now they're going to come back and they're going to BEAT us!" he yelled.

"It might happen," Dave said, "but it might not." Or something to that effect. I think he was trying to stay diplomatic. I never actually said that I wanted Seattle to win, and he never actually said that he wanted Pittsburgh to win, but we both sort of knew it all the same.

"This is Seattle's first time in the Super Bowl," I said, which was code for, I really want them to win.

"Well, they're an expansion team," Dave said, which was code for, I still want the Steelers to win. He's liked Pittsburgh since he was a kid.

"Expansion team?" I said. "When did they join the league?"

"At the same time as the Bucs," he said.

"You mean the Jaguars, right?" I said. I have vague memories of when we got a third Florida team--I think I was in high school or maybe college.

"No, the Bucs. Buccaneers."

Umm...okay. I don't even remember a time when Tampa Bay wasn't a team. They joined...maybe thirty years ago? Granted, I don't follow football. And I wasn't really watching the game. But still.

In fact, I didn't even think to ask until the game had already been over for some time.

"The Steelers won?" I asked.

"Yeah," he said, "21-10."

I told Daniel this morning on the way to school. He seemed pleased.

And now he can go regale the other kindergarteners with tales of Steel and Seahogs. Because, you know, this kind of thing is important.

Maybe.

A little bit.
