zucchini sonnet
Oct. 9th, 2010 02:48 pmThe idea to write a poem about vegetables came from bard_bloom on LJ.
The idea to use a Petrarchan sonnet came from mmsword on LJ.
shaterri kept poking me to write in general.
The zucchini is one Ellie and I really did pass by for a time while riding to her school on bikes.
***
A wooden fence we ride by every day
explodes into bright blossoms; out they spill
in golden ecstasy. Eyes take their fill
but something else is spied there where they lay:
a fruit - pinched, yet ballooning where it may.
A swollen, forest green zucchini will
grow where it wants, and then expanding still,
remain alone to rot and to decay.
So treasure undiscovered rests unknown.
It seems a shame to those who watch it wilt
and long for nourishment they'll only crave.
If only the zucchini could be shown
to those who carefully may tend the silt
that opens to an inadvertent grave.
