advice request

I know a ton of things I could get Ellie for her birthday...but I'm looking for something special, something that might be fun for the whole family, something with staying power - not just a light-up Ariel mermaid or whatever character toything is currently on display.

So...parents, geeks, and others...anyone seen anything terrifically nifty that you think would be just right for a four-year-old El-monster?

The big hits for Rhys right now have been a dollhouse and a few sets of letter blocks, enough letters to actually spell stuff. (THe latter was his request.) But we're fans of the classics over here.

Yeah, we have several plastic dollhouse sets that she likes playing with from time to time. She's interested in letters (we have the bath variety) but not *as* interested as Rhys, so I don't know if the blocks would be a big hit.

I give you...da-da-da...the Birthday Book!
Get a really nifty (and large) sketch/scrapbook. Have everyone (parents, sibling, and kid, even) write/draw/be creative on a page for each birthday; this is the perfect age to start at, 'cause she's old enough to get the idea, just! This year it'll be kind of small (include a special page at the front describing/explaining it), but over the years, it will become a real treasure for the whole family.

(Not entirely my own idea; modified from someone else's that I read about in Family Fun magazine. :)
