I'm thinking of purchasing a laptop. If you have an opinion on which OS/platform is best (Windows, Mac, or Linux) would you write and tell me why?

I really want a Mac, but I'm trying to justify the extra expense to myself.

I'll be using the computer for writing, light web design, light desktop publishing, email, and illegal downloading. ;-) I need to be able to fileshare with my desktop, which is Windows, print to my printer which the desktop also uses, and it needs to be configured with my wireless router.

Thanks to anyone who responds!

i have owned my iBook for three years. in that time i have never had to do a reformat or reinstall, and have never seen the dreadful "bomb dialog". the worst i've needed to do is the odd three-fingered salute and the occasional disk first aid (the equivalent to scandisk).

my version of OS X is actually two years out of date now, but it works just fine with the router, is capable of file and printer sharing, and does everything i need it to do. the newer versions do all that and more.

i am in no financial shape to buy a new computer now, but if/when i run this thing into the ground i'd sooner hang on to it for longer and save up to get a new mac, rather than spend less on a windows machine.

You *know* which platform I will recommend. :)

In short - you get what you pay for. A $1000 Mac is better than a $1000 PC. There is no such thing as a $400 Mac, but a $400 PC will give you lots of compatibility headaches and become obsolete within a year.

Have you used a Mac much before? You're welcome to play with mine.
