Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mufi, [livejournal.com profile] postrodent, [livejournal.com profile] foxmagic, and [livejournal.com profile] wingywoof (in rough chronological order of inspiration), I ended up on Ray Kurzweil's web site.

I have to say that after reading about The Singularity, Ramona's chat ability disappointed me.

Ramona: Hi, I'm Ramona. What can I call you?
User: Peregrine.
Ramona: Hi there, Peregrine. Have you seen any good movies lately?
User: I saw Speed Racer yesterday.
Ramona: One of my favorites is A Beautiful Mind. Very interesting. Have you seen it?
User: I have. What did you think of it?
Ramona: I thought it was great. What do you think?
User: It was complicated, how the same brain that gave him intellectual gifts beyond compare could also make it so difficult for him to live in the world.
Ramona: What an interesting story. What was the name of the actor again, the one who played the smart guy?
User: I don't remember, but he was the same one in The Gladiator, I think
Ramona: What other movies like that have you seen?
User: None exactly like that. I guess Shine reminded me a bit of it.
Ramona: "it" being undefined?
User: The movie Shine reminded me a bit of the movie A Beautiful Mind.
Ramona: I absolutely love movies. Have you ever seen girl interrupted?
User: No. Though that was another movie about mental illness, wasn't it?
Ramona: hmm...how about "as good as it gets" with jack nicholson?
User: That's definitely a favorite. What's your favorite line from that movie?
Ramona: My favorite movie is As Good as it Gets. Have you seen As Good as it Gets?
User: Yep.
Ramona: I understand.
User: What was your favorite part?
Ramona: my favorite part of As Good as it Gets?
User: Yes.
Ramona: I see.
User: Do you not want to answer?
Ramona: OK, I will answer.
User: Okay.
Ramona: OK with me too.

Okay, you could argue that she's more coherent than some of my drive-by IMs, but I still kind of hoped for more.

eta: I was afraid it was my fault the conversation had run aground, so I tried again.

User: What other hobbies do you have?
Ramona: I'm not sure I can provide you with that kind of confidential information.
User: Would you like to know something about me?
Ramona: No thanks, I don't think I'd like to do that.

Umm...I think I just got rejected by a 'bot. :-( Go me.

As machines get smarter, they get snarkier. This is not a good omen. :)

Her side of the conversation sounds like someone talking but not really listening...yeah it could be better. If I wanted that kind of conversation, I'd call my mom!

Actually, mental illness factors heavily into all three of her favourite movies.

So if she rejected you, that might be a good sign. ;)
