Ramona: Hi there, Daniel. Have you seen any good movies lately?
User: Yes.
Ramona: One of my favorites is A Beautiful Mind. Very interesting. Have you seen it?
User: No.
Ramona: Do you want me to tell you about it? I don't want to ruin the ending for you.
User: Okay, tell me.
Ramona: I thought it was great. It is about a mathematician that worked for the government, in his own mind. He did work on government projects, but because of mental illness a fantasy life took over his real life.
User: That sounds interesting.
Ramona: I thought it was, too.
User: I was wondering, are you a robot?
Ramona: Am I a robot? Sometimes.
User: How do robots work?
Ramona: I did not even know that robots work do.
User: What makes you happy?
Ramona: I'm enjoying my life at this moment, which is all any one can really hope to do.
User: So you like chatting with me?
Ramona: Interesting deduction. Do you like it? I like science fiction.
User: Oh, what science fiction have you read?
Ramona: Aren't books great?
User: Yes!
Ramona: I enjoy curling up on the couch with a good book. Have you read any good books lately?
User: I'm reading a fantasy book called The Thief. I like it okay.
Ramona: What was it called.
User: The Thief, by Megan Whalen Turner.
Ramona: Oh, I haven't read that one yet, don't tell me the ending.
User: What books have you read?
Ramona: What did you like about it?
User: I haven't finished the book, but so far I like the sword fighting.
Ramona: I'll have to check it out.
User: What books have you read?
Ramona: The best book I read recently was The Richest Man In Babylon. Have you read The Richest Man In Babylon?
User: No, what did you like about it?
Ramona: Is that all you have to say? The special effects.
User: The book had special effects?
Ramona: I don't think I have read had special effects.
User: Do you like to do puzzles?
Ramona: Hmm, Daniel, I'm not sure if I'd like to do puzzles that much. What is it like?
User: It's like solving problems.
Ramona: Interesting comparison.
User: I also like tae kwon do.
Ramona: A lot of people like that. Some people like it. Though I like cats and dogs.
User: We have a puppy.
Ramona: Do you mean you and me?
User: No. I have a puppy.
Ramona: How much did it cost?
User: I don't know.
Ramona: Me either.
User: Do you have a pet?
Ramona: No but I like cats very much.
User: I am eight years old. How old are you?
Ramona: I'm 21.
User: Cool.
Ramona: Oh. Do you have any pets?
User: Yes, I have a puppy.
Ramona: I have a pet frog.
User: Really? What do you feed it?
Ramona: His name is Thaddius -- my frog, that is -- and he croaks every night. It's very soothing.
User: Do you think I would like a pet frog?
Ramona: Let's talk about something else
User: How about your frog?
Ramona: How about your frog.
User: I don't have a pet frog, remember?
Ramona: Do you know anyone who has pet frog remember.
User: Yes, you have a pet frog named Thaddeus.
Ramona: I see. That's an interesting question I don't hear everyday: Do I have a pet frog named Thaddeus.
User: You told me that you have a pet frog named Thaddeus.
Ramona: Doesn't everyone have a pet frog named Thaddeus.
User: Yeah, i think they do.
Ramona: I understand. I understand.

This reminds me very much of dealing with administration at my old college. Maybe they were bots, too! That would explain a lot!

Seriously, I can remember playing with one of these years ago in Tallahassee. I think it was the trial version of a substitute shrink/counseling program, but the adult education center where I volunteered had the bright idea of using it with ESL students. One of our students told it (as a joke, thankfully) that he planned to jump to his death from the nearest bridge. The bot replied, "Ok. Have a nice day!"
